The classic application for ultrasonic sensors is non-contact level measurement of liquids or bulk materials in a container. The sensors measure levels ranging from a few millimeters up to 8 meters. A range of ultrasonic sensors is available, including models with one or two switching outputs for minimum/maximum control, or with analogue outputs 4–20 mA and 0–10 V for continuous level monitoring.
Chemically resistant versions are also available, such as the pico+TF level sensor in a compact M22 housing, the crm+ level sensor in an M30 housing, or the hps+ level sensor with a G1 or G2 process connection.
The pms ultrasonic sensor in hygienic design (EHEDG and ECOLAB certified) is ideally suited to intensive cleaning and disinfection thanks to its design, which has no gaps or edges where dirt can accumulate. It is used for hygienic level measurements.
Ultrasonic sensors for level measurement are used in various industries:
- Printing and paper industry: Monitoring the levels of aggressive cleaning fluids, varnishes and inks.
- Food and pharmaceutical industry: Measurement in tanks containing milk, juices or pharmaceutical liquids.
- Logistics: Level monitoring in storage tanks and silos for bulk materials (e.g. granules, powders) or liquids (e.g. water, oils, chemicals).
- Packaging: Precise dosing of liquids or bulk materials in filling systems.
